We closed on December 30th, 2002 and can now start on the ADA renovations. Caitlin will be home from The Shepherd Center in Atlanta on February 8th, and we want this house perfect for her accessibility and enjoyment so she can continue to surprise us with her recovery journey.
On this page, we will post the supply wish list and all our volunteer opportunities. Check back frequently, as it will constantly be updated. And, sign up to let us know which project you might be able to help us with accomplishing. There are must do items, would like to do items, and dreamy wish items that we think are actually possible for us to pull off working together! Richmond Hill Cares for Caitlin and we got this! Picture a mini "Extreme Home Makeover" Richmond Hill edition.
These are building supplies and specific home items we would love donated. They are labeled Need, Want, and Wish in order of importance. These are in no particular order, just added as we think of them. When someone steps up to adopt one of these items, we will update the listing to reflect the gift.
Special thank you to Livingoods Appliances and Bedding in Pooler for generously donating the perfect refrigerator for the space and Caitlin's accessibility!
Front loading set without bases would be ideal. (Electric, not gas.) Your generous GoFundMe donations with notations "for the house set-up" or #Richmond HillCares were used to purchase this item with Black Friday savings! Special thanks to Michael Penn at Lowe's Savannah.
MMR Steeplejacks & Historic Restoration of Richmond Hill (Nicole and Anthony Mallett) got us all set up with painting, and are doing the hard to reach foyer and stairwell. Ben, the new manager at the Sherwin Williams on 17 gave us all our paint! Volunteer painting crew knocked out most of the house the weekend of 1/13-15, BUT, we have more to do...mostly TRIM! If you can paint, even for a couple of hours, during the week or over the weekend, we need you. Please message us here!
The laundry room is convenient to Caitlin's room and the kitchen and is big. There is space for a sink, and we were thinking a classic farmhouse enameled sink with built in drainboard would be perfect as it could be mounted on legs and be ADA accessible and give Caitlin a place to wash her hands after gardening, wash paintbrushes or her dishes, etc without modifying the kitchen sink. Plus, they both love the vintage cottage look. Your GoFundMe donations earmarked for the house bought this for u
The master bath has two vanities. We'd like to remove the one to the left and install an ADA sink. Your generous GoFundMe donations with notations "for the house set-up" or #Richmond HillCares were used to purchase this item with Black Friday savings!
Caitlin is a Biologist/Chemist and loves nature. The raised garden beds at Shepherd have been one of her favorite activities. In the backyard, there is a large concrete patio, that could be bordered with these type beds for her enjoyment and recreational therapy. Melissa Hendricks' family is purchasing these and put them together at the house towards the end of January. Let us know if you're handy at assembling these kind of things and would like to help her.
We've got a new front load washer and dryer set being delivered, and want to install an ADA accessible sink in there with a counter and shelving to wash and store trach supplies, etc. This was a big wish list item to create the laundry room we envisioned for Caitlin to use, but also to sanitize and store her reusable trach and port parts. Huge thank you to Storehouse Salvage in Pembroke for donating the butcherblock for our project!
One of the therapy's that has been really beneficial is music therapy. Caleb plays guitar. Caitlin and Caleb have really enjoyed the piano at Shepherd. The thought is to turn the office room at the entrance into a music room. There's a really nice one on the Amazon wish list that would be perfect!
Because Caitlin is still having trouble with secretions and still has to be on the vent at night, Darlene will continue to stay in the bedroom with her. (Essentially, Darlene has slept on a hospital cot beside her daughter every night since June 16th.) This home's main bedroom is large enough for all of Caitlin's medical equipment and a nice twin daybed for Darlene. We have a frame. And, Tracey Long, a 1994 GSU alum that has been following her story has stepped up to purchase this item. ❤️
This is a wish for Caleb's room. I think his current full size bed is older than him...and I am positive he is taller than it is long. We would love to update his space as he will be home from college all he can to help care for his sister. ) Tracey Long has offered to purchase this one as well! Special thanks to Tim Morgan and team at Friendly Marketplace in Georgetown for giving us an amazing price on really comfy beds!
We need to install durable and easy to clean, waterproof, solid surface flooring. It's got to hold up to the casters of the hospital bed, wheelchair, other equipment. Georgia Floors Direct (Tim Fortson) came through for us with some awesome commercial grade vinyl plank. Tim's daughter attended GA Southern with Caitlin. And one of the awesome guys in there went to high school with her, remembering her to be "so sweet and so smart". Thank you to Martin Rodriguez for installing!
We asked for one dumpster for the demo, and Dumpsters-R-US (Jarred and Heather Ream) have blessed us with two for a week! All we are having to pay is the actual disposal fee with the county dump. Thank you so much!
These are the home renovation projects we will be tackling. You can sign up to help for these.
Nick Singleton, electrical engineer, handyman, and former high school classmate of Caitlin's, is tackling this important job for us!
HVAC was replaced three years ago. But inspection report shows it needs cleaning and a few ductwork repairs. This request is being fulfilled by the generosity of the folks over at Canady's Heating , Air, Plumbing!
Merit Homes of Richmond Hill (Jason Lee) has generously donated his crews to provide all the labor to build the front ramp and the back deck and ramp. Thank you!
This is a big essential project and in the works with multiple donations. Rex Smith of KBRS in Hardeeville is going to have the custom tile ready shower pan fabricated for us. Tammy Johnson of Tileology LLC in Charleston is going to help us with the tile. And, Rhonda Jones of Richmond Hill's JJ Select Construction Company reached out to build this in excellence! Teamwork in action! Thank you all.
The current back slider is in rough shape. Jason Lee of Merit Homes has come through for us on this big big ask!
This project requires architectural drawings and permits and lots of materials. We are working on all these things. Merit Homes of Richmond Hill (Jason Lee) has his guys ready to tackle this job when we have our ducks in a row. We've got the architect lined up, and the materials donated.
We are still painting! Please reach out to us if you can give us a couple hours of your help!
Chris Adams with The Educated Landscaper is taking lead on turning the backyard into a nature lover's paradise for Caitlin. We need some volunteers to help with this project! Shout out to Seth and Kevin of Get Mowed for the generous donation of 6 cubic yards of topsoil, and to Mike at Greenblade for the new Zosia sod! Shrubs and beds go in 2/1-3 and we need help with laying sod on 2/1. Sign up and let us know you have a "green thumb" and are at the ready to help!
This service has generously been donated by three local companies, Top Class Cleaning Solutions (Michael Mayne), Clean Freaks Savannah (David Guild), and Quality Clean Up Pressure Washing (Travis Stalnaker). Together they will divide and conquer this big task!
Darlene won't be back until she brings home Caitlin to the new place. Grandma Linda has been holding down the fort at their rental and taking care of the pets. They have a tiny place, so packing won't be hard. I can not thank everyone enough, we now have an ABUNDANCE of volunteers for this task. Taking lead on the packing team are Caitlin's besties from forever, Katie Enslow and Emily Jones.
This service has been generously donated by Lenlee Bodie who owns the local Molly Maid. Thank you Lenlee!
This is a big wishlist item that I really want to say is a need. We'd love to have the oak cabinets updated with a painted finish, add new easy to use hardware. I am so tickled to announce that B&P Painting of Richmond Hill (Brian Baraniak) has stepped up to make this wish a reality!
This task is being fulfilled by Blessings Granted Cleaning Company of Bloomingdale. (Lynlea and Felicia Poores) They are also going to handle the move-out cleaning of the rental house after we have it empty!
The garage will be used for the handicap van to keep it nice. Also, we want to outfit the garage so Caitlin can be loaded and unloaded there even in inclement weather. Floor has some cracks to seal. Needs a fresh coat of paint. Brighter lighting. Wish list would be to have the floor finished nice! Thank you to Brian of B&P Painting for taking on making the garage ready for the handicap van and foul weather ramp system.
This is a small renovation project. Install a sink. Install the washer and dryer. Add some countertop and open shelving for storage. A local contractor has tackled this project for us!
We are so excited about this! Some of you may know that Richmond Hill is home to Ceasarstone, which makes the most gorgeous solid surface countertops. They are donating us the slabs for this project and Surface Setters is going to fabricate them for us! (Surface Setters is owned by Jill and Hanu of Richmond Hill.)
As Caitlin has to be on a vent all night long, we can't risk losing power. Her insurance is securing a generator for her as part of her necessary equipment. Thank you to Clay Waters of First Choice Electric who is going to do everything we need to have this properly and safely installed.
We could not do this without out lead contractor, donating his time to us to oversee the renovations. Joe Brindle of Brindle Properties of Richmond Hill is doing whatever it takes...widening doorways, demo duty to help our vision come to life, and going to build us the most awesome Caitlin & Darlene suite and ADA bathroom!
